It represents a special place created in 1890 as the nation's second national park, and the first to be established to protect a living thing - the giant sequoia tree. The...

    Steve Pastis|Updated Oct 9, 2017

The San Diego Comic-Con attracts more than 170,000 pop culture fans annually, but is it senior-friendly? This 63-year-old writer enjoys attending the event each year but when I was there this year, I started wondering if it was something I would recommend to other seniors. I decided to get the advice of two cartoonists whose tables I make a point of visiting at every Comic-Con. "The Con's attendees span all age groups, all races and backgrounds," said former National Lampoon c...

  • Pancreatic Cancer: Know Your Family, Know Your Risk

    Updated Oct 9, 2017

Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest cancers, with a mere 29% one-year survival rate. In 2016, pancreatic cancer became the third leading cause of cancer death in the country. The time frame between diagnosis and death is often short. Only 7% of people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer survive five years. This is very small compared to prostate cancer or breast cancer, where more than 90% of patients survive for five years after diagnosis. "Most people are unaware of how...

Eighty percent of residential care facilities for the elderly are six-bed facilities." Ken Cruickshank|Updated Oct 9, 2017

When a claim is denied, it is usually because the veteran is missing one of the elements for any service-connected disability claim. If the VA denies your claim and you feel there is sufficient evidence to support the finding of a service connection, you must follow specific procedures laid out below. Some people will tell you that you just need to continue to disagree with the decision until the VA agrees with you; however, this procedure rarely, if ever, works. If you fail...

  • Kings County Works within Budget to Fight Elder Abuse

    Steve Pastis|Updated Oct 9, 2017

Unlike neighboring Tulare County, Kings County has not applied for grant money to create an elder abuse task force, so the D.A.'s office is working within its budget. "Grant funding is always nice, but it creates false security," said Fagundes. "You don't know if it's going to continue. I'm no...
